Goals
I have found that setting cardio goals based on mileage is better than time. For instance, if I decide I'm going to run one mile or bike 5 miles, I tend to push myself a lot harder. if it's a matter of "Let's do 15 minutes" I never do as many miles as if I set a goal that takes 15 minutes to do.
Fun tip: Doing a stair stepper will leave you all "Phew, I certainly am breathing hard."
