Did my first triathlon on Saturday. The plan was to finish and in that it went very well. I figured out the transition stuff pretty well and didn't have any issues there. I was hoping for around 2:15 for the whole thing and got basically that with a 2:17. Triathlons are pretty competitive though so that put me almost dead last overall. My swim was fairly competitive and seemed to go very well. I was a little less competitive on the bike but I averaged 17.1 mph which I was very happy with. The run wrecked me though taking 45 minutes to do 5k. I figure that if I had been able to actually run the whole thing instead of walking most of it, I could probably easily knock 10-15 minutes off that time which would have allowed me to be competitive with the slower half of the field.
There's another triathlon in late August in the town that I live in. My goal is to get my running in order and be able to run the whole 5K by then. I also need to get into better cardiovascular shape. I didn't feel comfortable pushing myself too hard in this first race not knowing how hard it would be. Now that I know I can do it, I'd like to do one where I can actually push myself to be fast. I like how this type of event challenges you no only against other people, but against yourself. I can really see how people get hooked on these things.
