ShyGuy's Journal, 27 Mar 17

Yesterday I stood strong and avoided a situation that could have led to falling off the wagon. My cousins organized a family get together, but the restaurant they chose, though it has some pretty good food, is not low carb friendly. It was a Family/ BBQ restaurant that I've eaten at more times than I can remember, in the past; however everything on the menu is either heavily sauced, or in the case of seafood, is battered and deep fried, and the sides aren't much better. I decided not to go, knowing that there will be other occasions that I'll see them, and that it wasn't worth the risk of having to start over. :-)

Shame there was nothing on the menu for you to eat, ShyGuy. Maybe next time you can organize the get together and choose a low carb friendly restaurant. Good for you for sticking to your program. If you don't do it, who will?

Thanks ladies. I've realized that there will always be an event or an occasion that will pop up, and it happens year round, that will challenge my will power to stick to my program, and I refuse to let anything take me down. Yes, there are some restaurants that are, more or less, low carb friendly and if we go to those, at least I'll have a fighting chance to eat something, right along with the crowd, and stay low carb.

I would want to go to see everybody. I would eat my meal at home and then go and eat a salad little by little. It's more acting the part of eating like everyone else, but not. Talk alot... Stay interested in the conversation and feel proud of what you are doing. Be proud.

I find that restaurants are incredibly supportive when I say I'm on a special diet that does not allow me to eat any carbs. They usually agree to give me more veggies and leave off the carby side of fries, rice or pasta; sauces on the side or leave them off--saute food instead of frying. If not, most places have a salad or you can eat before you go. Family is important. I'd think this through again next time.

BBQ restaurants are bad about having a lot of low carb options. I usually order a salad topped with plain pulled chicken or pork. Order the sauce on the side so you can control your intake. Dab your fork in the sauce then pick up your food. I normally eat my salads this way and use a small fraction of the dressing/sauce that's provided. And don't be shy about special preparations to your salad (ie 'No croutons or carrots please.') Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. With Easter coming up, there will be another opportunity to hangout with family in the coming weeks, and usually that happens at someones house, where it will be easier to make the low carb choices, as someone always makes collard greens, green beans, baked ham, a salad, or something else I can eat.

I like that you made a choice for your OWN health - sure there are ways to go but I find I get tempted and then mad at myself later
