I actually started this diet on the Saturday 20th August weighing 279 3/4 lbs but cant seem to enter this as my start weight...hoping fat secret will help me lose lots more!!!

Hi Emma, Yeah, FatSecret considers your "starting" weight to be the weight you enter on the day you join; however, you can add weights for dates prior to your Sept 12th entry. Just go to your MY WEIGHT HISTORY page (Mouse over MY FATSECRET link and you'll see the link to that page), look along the right side of that page, and you'll see a link called Enter Historical Weight. You can click that and then navigate to the August 20th date to put in your real starting weight for the August date. It will notify you that you're putting in a weight "before" other weights/dates, but just confirm that, and you're done. :) Hope that helps. And best wishes for a successful weight loss journey!
