Keto is a tool to lower decrease hunger horomones, insulin & allow access (or easier access) to body fat for energy. There are also other benefits, but when it comes to weightloss the fat you burn can come from your body or your plate. Calories do matter, but not JUST calories (for many people, mainly the ones with high insulin levels). Also, too much protein can prevent ketosis. Good luck to you on your journey!
