abbadabba's Journal, 12 May 22

Tomorrow is my last day of working for the government. I am stressed out about it, but as I walked through the halls of the building I have been working in for over 30 years, I realized I will never ever have to do again many things that I disliked.
The transition will be difficult, but one of my new friends is a woman who lost her dear husband to ALS 3 years ago, so I do have a good perspective I think.
Not sure why I think I won't have an easy time in retirement. I think I am just projecting the stress of getting things done to leave the job and on Monday I will be fine.

I taught school for many years and loved my job! I still worked 5 years after my husband retired because I wasn't ready. After a few difficult years I decided it was time and I never looked back! I often wonder how I got all the stuff I needed to do while working cuz I'm busy all the time now.. I think you will love it!

It took me a little time to accept retirement, HOWEVER, for me ... I replaced working for other to working for me. I started organizing and planning a different daily routine. I now do things that interest me. I enjoy many different activities that I never had time to do while working. Now I enjoy filling my days with walking, hiking, gardening, crafts and weekly get togethers with family and friends. Joining a GYM is next on my list after a bit of travel. Accept your new way of living and enjoy!

I worried about it also but I haven't regretted a day of retirement. In fact it was a blessing in disguise. I was able to spend time with two very important people but that I have lost since. If I had been working I wouldn't have made the time needed to be with them, help with them when they got sick and to get to know them better. It's a gift. I was a teacher and thought I would miss co-workers and kids. I literally mourned doing it while I was making the decision. My husband talked me into doing it early because thing at work were getting so stressful. I have not looked back - it was the best decision I had made in a very long time. Do what you love - do what you feel a passion for and you'll always be busy. I run out of time to do what I need to do. Never a dull moment.

change is often scary and working a job long term, you have a routine but the future of hopefully less stress awaits! I'm not retirement eligible yet but have been working a stressful job for 25 plus years now, so I get that you are worried but it's probably going to be a wonderful change! best of luck!

I retired at age 70 after 25 years. I missed work (not stressful) but did not miss the two hours a day commute in heavy traffic. The commute was too stressful. I had planned to work until 75, as my sister a nurse had done. You will enjoy retirement. Just go for it with gusto.

My wife was also very worry about retirement, but I talked her into it. She has de-stressed, relaxed, gotten healthier, and lost weight. She exercises regularly, makes healthier food choices and is just enjoying life. I truly wish we’ll in retirement.
