I was going to say a beer really couldn't cause two pounds, but on Atkins a lot of stuff can cause the scale to go up easily. I know about alcohol though. I have basically given it up for a while so I can lose. It can inhibit weight loss for some. Good luck!

Thanks Suzi. When I did Atkins very successfully in the past, I used to go out quite often and drink rum and diet coke and I still lost a lot of weight. It seems to be different this time. It may have just been a cooincidence although lst time I drank it did the same thing.

Is your daughter diabetic? If so watching the sugar and carbs is a good thing as long as you dont get too restrictive. The body needs carbs, and for diabetics letting their blood sugar get too low can be more dangerous than having it too high. I use protein shakes to boost my protein intake, whey protein isnt bad but if youre just looking for a breakfast replacement i would consider carnation instant breakfast for her. Its very fortified with vitamins and minerals, proteins and some carbs. Shes young, and with her losing weight some extra nutrition might fill a nutritional gap that we get when we switch up our diets. Kudos to you and your daughter for making such positive life changes, and best of luck to you both.

Thanks Yolanda. She is not diabetic yet but the doctor says she definitely will be if we don't turn it around. She has PCOS and is severely insulin resistant with dark skin under her neck (Acanthosis Nigricans) from the insulin. It was at 120 last time she was tested and normal is 5 to 25. She's working really hard to lose weight and really becoming aware of foods that she should stay away from which is mainly carbs. I'd like her to go to a nutritionist but I don't want one that is going to push low fat because I'm not buying that. I'm reading Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes and it's a real eye-opener. Her endocrinologist recommended it and is really explains a lot.

Well you are making all the right changes, I agree wholeheartedly that fat is not the enemy here, but all things in moderation. Youre doing an excellent job helping her on the path to better health. You should both be very proud! Im not a nutritionist but ive got a little medical background and have spent the last year working on my own diet and nutrition. Any way that I could help I would be more than happy.

Thank you Ekinsley :-) It has been quite a learning process but the small positive changes we make really add up over the long haul. I look forward to getting to know you better through your journey!

Like others already said, I think it is wonderful that you are setting a great example for your daughter, as well as educating both of you on her risk for diabetes and how to avoid it. Keep up the good work, both of you. I use a "zero carb" protein powder and add frozen mixed berries. I only drink it once or twice a week, as I am not really trying to be "high protein," per se. I drink it in place of a meal if my other meals have been higher in fat and carbs and I just feel like something "lighter." Good luck!

If your daughter doesnt like to eat breakfast maybe she can do the intermittant fasting that others are doing?
