mrstiffanykuhlmann's Journal, 09 Mar 14

I have been keeping a food journal everyday for the past three days. Starting off, I just recorded what I ate and how many calories I consumed. I felt overwhelmed with how much calories a day I have taken in( still overwhelmed). Since I have noticed this, I have tried desperately to cut the numbers down. I feel completely empty inside because I have cut back somewhat, but I gave in to my temptations lately.
This morning I woke up in a bad mood and didn't want to even try to make breakfast for my family. So guess what? I took myself and my three kids to McDonald's.
I instantly felt ashamed of myself. Not only did I feel ashamed of myself for eating there, but also I feel that way because I let my kids eat that junk too. Not a very good example for my kids... I want all this weight to be off me, but in reality, it isn't easy.
I don't know what to do....

Well, the fact that you're on here is a positive sign. Try not to feel too guilty. Just try to stay in a caloric deficit. So if you splurged on Mcdonalds and 'wasted' 800 or so calories, don't sweat it... Just eat something lighter for the remainder of the day. (I know... Easier said than done.) Good luck and keep at it.

Well, yes, it might be, but the aim of getting fit and healthy is stronger and this is why we are here. Lots of support here and a place to enter your food intake. Both have helped keep Mr focused on portions and exercise

I can see the support for sure. It really does help to be able to see what you have eaten and what you have done, but sometimes that temptation just sneaks up on you...

Welcome. I started FS a few days ago and the support is absolutely wonderful! Just know when you fall...we are here to help you get back up. As you would tell your kiddos....YOU CAN DO IT! I KNOW YOU CAN! I am a massive carb-o-holic. I made a commitment to cut carbs waaaay back and thought it would be so hard to do, but it truly hasn't been that bad. Just know the changes you will make will not only be in your best interest it will trickle down to your kiddos. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! I KNOW YOU CAN!

Try eating more... but foods that are healthy and filling. I find if I am full, I lose the temptation to eat the first thing I see (normally McDonalds or something as equally bad). Don't go more than 3 hours without eating something (but make it a healthier choice- fruit salad, veggies, nuts, popcorn, hard boiled egg, yogurt, etc).

Go back and look at what you ate. Anything healthy? It's totally up to you to make the decision to eat right. What you eat will also influence what your kids eat. There are lots of diets on this site. Check them out. Find one that you can live with and make life changes that will become a permanent part of your life. You can do this. Get away from the junk. There's no benefit other then the instant gratification of taste, then it jumps on your gut or thighs. Not worth it.

Tiffany. Get away from processed foods and you're easily half way home. Just the fat in the two links of sausage you ate is equal to about 5 apples. It's just a decision you need to make, and I think I'm speaking for everyone when I say we all struggled at the outside. You can do this. Go proactive. Log your food before you eat it. Don't feel guilty. Do move forward. We're with you.

By the way. You hit it far too hard on day one. Admirable, but you have to just get a handle on it. Why don't you see if you can get to 2000 calories each day for the next few days. Start buying veggies and fruit. I didn't mean to sound harsh in my last post. I hope I didn't.

what is done is done . It is the past . Adjust your diet and exercise accordingly . You are only human

Northern is absolutely right, once you cut out a lot of the processed stuff you will be surprised at how much you can eat in a day while staying within your RDI. It can be very overwhelming at first, at not every day is going to be perfect but thats okay. Its all about progress. Also, one thousand calories is very very low. Start at two, start cutting the processed stuff then go from there. There are some pretty good BMR calculators out there that can help you figure out how much you should be eating to lose. I try to never eat less than 13-14 hundred. Nothing will ruin you faster than being hungry. You can do this! Best of luck to you :-)

Thanks to all and no, no harsh words. It's just reality. The hardest part is waking up in the morning and trying to remember that I made a goal. This morning wasn't to great of a start either, but the day isn't over. I thought about juicing before... the machine to juice is too much and out of budget right now. I do like fruits and veggies, but at some point, when I buy a lot of them, I don't get to them all in time before they go bad. I know I'm not the best at this right now. I've done this regiment before where I was doing wonderful and went to the gym and lost 50lbs last year. I don't know why I am holding myself back.

1000 a day is just seeting yourself up for failure, especially if you are starting out. I woundn't go under 1200 at any point in time. You are starving yourself so no wonder why you had the urge to hit Mciie D's. Get some "Good stuff" in your house so it's right in front of you so you will be likely to eat what's right there. You all ready beat yourself up enough so now dust yourself off and jump back on!!!

the thing about mcdonald's, or any other restaurant, is to know what you are going to have before you go. check the nutrition info and plan it as part of your daily intake. even mcdonald's has options that are, if not the healthiest, acceptable foods.

Like you, I was also quite taken back when I started and saw how many calories I put away. Half the battle is entering the calories. Once you enter your calories, you can easily see where the problem lies. Also, your feelings of shame will go away once you become more disciplined. Knowing that 85% of the time you eat well, then can eat that desert or whatever, guilt-free. One more thing, I recommend keeping FS open all the time and never closing the window. If it is readily available, it will be easier to stick with it.

One of my favorite quotes which helps me keep things going the way I want them to is: "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."---Wayne Dyer. When we tell ourselves that things are easier said than done(even if it's true)we set our mind (the part of our body that determines what we do or dont do)up for the task(which we just told it that it will be difficult)& so then it WILL be. But when we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change...& so does the outcome! Focus on the positives rather than the negatives. For example: Eating fruit in its natural state is not only healthy for me but it's less time consuming than juicing & with the $ I save from not buying a small appliance I am able to afford more healthy food! Here's another one to get you started,The more I eat healthy choices the less cravings I have for the foods that are harming by body & weight loss goals, & I feel better not just physically but mentally since I have taken away the need to feel guilty & ashamed. :D It's been said that it takes repeating something 21 times before it becomes a habit. Why not set it as a mini-challenge for yourself to try something you really want to change for just 21 days?!! Who knows,it just may change your life! It has mine....& still is!

I second the 1200calorie deal your mood will be better if you eat a little more also. Make sure your getting protein in there too are your kids old enough to get breakfast on their own? I give my kids a few options a week, oatmeal cereal toast or bagels cheese sticks are easy in the morning. Good luck it isn't easy to get started but after a while it will get to be normal! And you will always have those times that you just need to get something quick and easy don't beat yourself up just keep going

Tim said it best. They have the egg white McMuffin and the calories aren't bad. I like the Filet of Fish without one half of the bun. I hope you feel better soon.
