I decided about 3 months ago to stop eating mea & dairy (because I’m certain the gasses I give off after animal protein consumption could have me mistaken for a cow 🐄 )!! So I’ve been cooking more, to accommodate my new found vegan life style, and that’s going semi well, except...I made tzatziki (whole fat yogurt)and that sent my digestion way off track for the evening!! All of this totally too much information is really just to ask HOW THE HELL DO I GET MORE PROTEIN?? **soy is not an option, and meat/dairy it totally out!
!!HELP!!

Oh I am so sorry... How dreadfully hard when you guys make such beautiful food that you can't eat. I have no suggestions, but I really hope you find some good way to keep your muscles fed. I just thought of something... Small but something. I found a multi color quinoa that has 6 grams complete protein in 1/4 cup dry. It is absolutely awesome in flavor and has become a "staple" for me. I know it is hardly any protein, but for a grain it is high.

@melissatwa, thank you! Anything helps, really! I’m not a fan of meat really anyway, so this isn’t a challenge, except for protein intake! But protein bars/shakes really help the cause! :) I’ll try the quinoa! I like it!

I did find the tri color quinoa has the most protein. We make it in our rice maker many times a week nowdays. I find rinsing it very well and repeatedly before cooking helps it not have the bitter taste some quinoa can have. My husband eats it as a breakfast cereal with brown sugar and cream! He claims it is the best hot cereal ever! Good luck, girl! You have a super attitude! I'm glad you have found something to make you feel better! Thst is the most important thing!

Hi there, I have alpha gal syndrome which means that I'm allergic to mammal proteins and I'm lactose intolerant so I'm vegan. If you'd like any help with it, I have tons of resources. Unfortunately, I rely on soy a lot for protein. Are you sensitive to soy too?

@atriel2-thank you for sharing! I looked in to AlphaGal. I don’t seem to have the same issues (which is not to say I don’t have that), I think I just don’t do well with animal proteins, and of I stay away from them, I seem to do a lot better! Mostly my issues are purely digestive issues (gas, bloating, bloating, etc.), and occasionally, it gets to the point where I have to hunch over due to gas bubbles because I have to burp...but it is painful, and terrible! So...on this new journey I go!

That sounds more like an intolerance than an allergy. Intolerances are gastrointestinal and allergies involve the histamine system. Still super uncomfortable and still a nuisance. I'm intolerant to dairy but fully allergic to most animal proteins. Either way, I can absolutely help. 🙂

@atriel2-thank you so much!! I appreciate the offer for advice! I’ll prob. Stalk you a bit, and ask questions...I have zero structure for what I’m doing, other than the fact that I’ve just cut out so much, because of my tummy troubles (I mean no dietitian or guidance)...I have been feeling great, and I am on a mission to stay healthy for life, not just the fast fad life style! Oh-and for soy, I am not supposed to have it because it affects the way my thyroid medicine absorbs. :/

Okay. Please do stalk and feel free to ask any questions you need. First things first, if you're cutting out animal products you absolutely have to take a B-12 supplement. A lot of omniovores have a B-12 deficiency too, especially if they aren't eating a variety of things. Second, a D3 supplement is necessary too. As far as soy that definitely makes it a little trickier but it's still absolutely do-able.

@davehoward63-21 whole grains, not protein! :/ but, thank you for the awesome pea protein ideas!

When I was vegan, I used to add hemp seeds to all my meals. There are 10g of protein per 3 tbsp, which is pretty good! Even though I eat everything now, I still use them. You can also try spirulina powder (in smoothies), nutritional yeast (so good on popcorn or pasta), and chia seeds (to make pudding or add to coconut yogurt parfaits). My husband has a really big sweet tooth, so he’d make these little no cook balls from ground up dates, oats, cacao, maca, nuts, chia, hemp, and flax seeds. It was a great way to get some nutrients and protein in between meals. A vegan diet didn’t agree with me in the long run, but I am friends with many vegans who are very healthy. Just make sure to take care of your microbiome if you’re having any type of digestion discomfort or issues. I always recommend some sort of fermented drink or food (or a probiotic supplement) daily no matter which diet/lifestyle you follow.

Hey, I’ve missed this... I also cut out meat, chicken and dairy for the same reasons and it’s been almost 3 years now. Protein intake can be difficult and I lean on fish, shrimp and eggs. For a boost I eat select protein bars that my digestive system approves of...

@chris-I’m glad you’re helping connect us all up!! I’m not as good at remembering everyone and their FS names, but appreciate the connects! @newname-thanks for the tips! I will def. try some of these things out! :) @atriel-I don’t go on the computer, so I can’t see the messages...but, I am on insta @mrsduggan2011...thank you, for all the advice and help!

@lowkeylife-it does feel way better, to lick meat out! Really, I’m trying for full vegan! My biggest issue is the lack of protein intake, and I don’t eat soy/fish! I think I’m going to have to just keep a pouch of dark leafy greens on my belt so I can graze on that all day! Lol!

I wonder if the tzatziki I ate the other night was bothering my stomach too. Hmmmm!? When I eat Greek food I use a lot of that.
