Lots of small goals mean lots of successes and success is what drives me forward! I do 5 lbs at a time because anything more than that and I resist. Not proud of that fact (it's quite embarrassing actually) but it is what it is, and I just have to accept it so I can use it to my advantage.

I keep my large goal in mind (82 lbs to go) but to keep focused, I just work to get to next lower 10lbs bracket. It works pretty good for me.

I find smaller goals are less overwhelming. When you attain that goal, you can set another!
