Looking for any advice, I'm obviously calorie counting and have recently decided that with a few attacks of gout, that staying off meat and fish in general is a good idea. I'm finding keeping to around 1800cal relatively easy, but I'm finding that my weight day to day is staying fairly still.

So, my question is, is it worth reducing this to 1300-1500, or is there something I should be absolutely avoiding food wise? carbs etc?

Have you tried doing 5:2 so 5 days of what you are already doing and 2 days of your choice at lower calories (doesn't have to be consecutive days)?

I've done 5:2 before, I found it worked well. I just turned into a hangry mess. All being well, it was probably because I'd rushed into doing that top soon. Good plan!! - Thanks for the tip!

Keep up the fluids if you are a sufferer of gout esp in hot weather.

You won’t see much difference day to day. Weigh weekly and concentrate on burning more calories than you eat day to day and your results will probably feel more noticeable/satisfying

I've been sticking mostly to 800 calories a day for the last few months and I've lost 28lbs and I'm at my goal weight. I haven't done any extra exercise at all. I drink lots of fizzy water with pure lemon juice. I also have berries with coconut yogurt and chia seeds (high in fibre, absorb lots of water and help you feel full). I honestly have not felt hungry at all. I'm eating more veg on a daily basis than I ever have! If I feel hungry at all a mug of veg or chicken oxo with white pepper and salt doors the trick. You just have to experiment and find a works for you. I have tried to stay low carb as well as low calorie and I've lost weight quickly which is very motivating. Good luck!

Oh and I weigh whenever the urge takes me, always at the same time (first thing in the morning after a wee and before any drinks). My weight hasn't fluctuated, it has plateaued a couple of times. Again, find whatever suits you. If weighing everyday motivates you, great! If it has the opposite effect, don't do it 😀

As a fellow gout sufferer (albeit one taking allopurinol and not had an attack in a while) I also recommend you drink plenty of water (2-3l of still water) and take a vitamin C supplement. I'm not normally big on supplements but Vit C is water soluble so you can't OD as long as you stay well hydrated and it's a good ideal to top up with it if you're drinking a lot of water. Be wary of pulses which you might be planning on eating if you're avoiding meat & fish - they are high in purines which can bring on a gout attack. All the best!
